how to listen for resize events in..

sledorze
..flash (sorry this is not specifically an haXe question; I'm still new to the flash API and you're the community I'm in)

I want to be able to know when a component width / height and/or position changes..
(I want to try some reactive stuff.. )
May that's even not possible........

Thanks,
Stephane

Ok..
looks like if there was something valuable; it would have been used here:
https://github.com/minimalcomps/minimalcomps/blob/master/src/com/bit101/components/HBox.as
which is not the case.

If I am wrong and this is *not* the state of the art, please, let me know..

Thanks,
Stehane

One way to do that is to use setters to trigger some event or callback.

If your question is about a default flash API way to know that,
AFAIK ResizeEvent and MoveEvent are only available in flex.

Simply put, there's no way to do this directly. You will have to write
a layer on top of the display list and dispatch those events yourself,
if you want this. There are many things that can change the size of a
DisplayObject:

- drawing into graphics
- moving, scaling, rotating
- adding/removing children (observable)
- setting text attributes, modifying text
- loading operations (observable)

That what minicomps revealed me.. honestly I though flash was doing more than that..
Anyway, I'll cope with it!

Thanks all,

Re: how to listen for resize events in..

Juraj Kirchheim
The thing is, if the flash player dispatched events every time a
component changes it size, this would have considerable performance
costs, especially since the instantiation of the event object alone
adds serious overhead.

If you're looking for reliable, yet flexible ways to manipulate text,
then TLF might be worth a look:
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/textlayout/ (although using it in
haXe is probably more than painful)

TLF is HUGE though. really nice end result but i've never thought it was worth an extra 400k!

stèphane, i'd make setters for what you want to listen to events from, and dispatch them from there.

Oh sorry, I thought that you want to resize stuffs when the stage gets resized.

At this point, maybe something like

class PropChanger extends flash.events.EventDispatcher {
  public function new() bindeds = new flash.utils.Dictionary()
  var bindeds:flash.utils.Dictionary;// instance -> fieldArray
  public function set( instance:Dynamic , field:String , value:Dynamic ):Void {
    Reflect.setField( instance , field , value );
    var binded = binded[instance];
    if( binded != null )
      for( f in binded )
        if( f == field )
          dispatchEvent( new flash.events.Event( f+'Change' ) );
  }
  override function addEventListener( instance:Dynamic , field:String , listener:flash.events.Event->Void ):Void {
    if( bindeds[instance] == null )
      bindeds[instance] = [field];
    else
      bindeds.push( field );
    super.addEventListener( field+'Change' , listener );
  }
}

I have only toyed around with it thus far, so I wouldn't know, but I
thought you could use framework caching, much like you would with
flex?

TLF is HUGE though. really nice end result but i've never thought it was worth an extra 400k!

stèphane, i'd make setters for what you want to listen to events from, and dispatch them from there.

The thing is, if the flash player dispatched events every time a
component changes it size, this would have considerable performance
costs, especially since the instantiation of the event object alone
adds serious overhead.

If you're looking for reliable, yet flexible ways to manipulate text,
then TLF might be worth a look:
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/textlayout/ (although using it in
haXe is probably more than painful)
