Anyone here familiar with PortableApps (http://portableapps.com) ?
I'd very much like to put my entire development setup onto an USB stick in order to quickly demonstrate my projects' progressions and latest additions. At the moment, I stuff it all Windows XP VMware client on a 30G USB HD, shut it down, install VMware Player on a 3rd party's PC, boot into the VMware client and it works perfectly. Drawbacks: - it takes allways a lot of time to boot and shutdown the VMware client - sometimes the 3rd party's PC just is to light (need more than 1 GByte memory on XP, some 2 GByte at least on Vista and a decent CPU) - the external USB HD is just to big for easy carrying PortableApps runs nearly everything one needs from a decent USB stick: - Firefox - XAMPP (Apache, MySQL, PHP, ..) - Notepad++ but haXe needs a C:\Program Files\.. type of location/setup doesn't it ? Can haXe/Neko/haxelibs run from just any folder on a USB stick ? You can put the haxe folder anywhere you want ... just launch haxesetup.exe after moving it; it will setup the PATH correctly to the current location.

Nice, that means I can make a "haXe v2.03 Portable" installer.. :)
(leaves only a "VIm Portable" on my wishlist). Should I post the "haXe v2.03 Portable" installer here on the list too ? I mean, is there interest and/or a better place to put it ? Hello Martin
There IS a Vim Portable: http://portablegvim.sourceforge.net/ And you can have autocompletion with a haxe omnicompletion plugin I wrote. Have to put it on haxelib soon, as I lost my domain some time ago... Hey, thanks for the link. I'll have a look at it shortly.
In the mean time: if anyone is interested, I have a basic PortableApps version of haXe 2.03 constructed... :-D To download, see: http://www.cosix.com/haXeNekoPortable/ (= + SWHX lib) I can now compile my complete haXe and SWHX project from the USB stick, so it seems to work perfectly. Still, I run it on the same PC now where I had a working setup (deleted now), so my project files *may* silently refer to external stuff present on my PC... I'd like to make this a "real" PortableApp, but I need at least 1 independant tester I presume... ;) Todos: construct a correct behaving haXeNekoPortable.exe construct a "reset to old settings" program Grtz, -- -Martijn On Fri, 17 Jul 2009, Nemea Lion wrote: > Hello Martin > > There IS a Vim Portable: > http://portablegvim.sourceforge.net/ > > And you can have autocompletion with a haxe omnicompletion > plugin I wrote. It does *not* need the PortableApps environment, it will work just as well on any USB stick, mobile phone drive, harddisk, etc. Even on CD if a readonly haXe suffices... Just run the "haXeNekoPortable.bat" to open "haXe on the go"... ;-) If Nicolas is listening: I was a bit weary with respect to the licensing aspects. I put all flags on true, meaning it's allowed to be copied, open source, freeware and may be used in commercial products. The last one is the one I was not all sure about; there are *some* restrictions for commercial use or not ? There's a new version, a bit more enhanced:
http://www.cosix.com/haXeNekoPortable/haXeNekoPortable-2.03.2-alpha.zip (project page http://www.cosix.com/haXeNekoPortable/) It's very much a work in progress: both portable entries need to be executables instead of .bat files and functionality has not been added yet to conform to PortableApps.com conventions. It works allright, but if anyone has a bit of background in PortableApps launchers: help is greatly appreciated.
